Jeep JL: American vs. European models – Off-road performance differences

Before we dive into specific lift kits up to 2 inches Jeep JL, here’s something important to know: Wranglers vary not only between trims but also between regions. The American version of the Wrangler JL is usually better equipped and has slightly different specs than the European one.

Why is that? It’s often due to different regulations and standards between the U.S. and Europe, but also due to the preferences of drivers. In America, off-roading is a lifestyle, which is why their Jeeps are more off-road-ready straight from the factory. That’s why, for many European off-road enthusiasts, buying a Wrangler from the U.S. (link) is worth the effort. 😉

Why mention this? Mainly to make you aware before buying the vehicle, but also when purchasing aftermarket parts or accessories. Always ensure you’re choosing products suited to the specific version, edition, or model of your Wrangler even if you look for lift kits up to 2 inches Jeep JL.

Wrangler JL: Technical Differences by Version. Lift kits up to 2 inches Jeep JL

As mentioned, differences exist between Wranglers depending on the market, and also between specific models. In the table below, we’ve listed the 2019–2020 models. We’ve skipped the post-lift 2024 Wrangler (link), but the differences in suspension kit selection will be minimal.

*The values are approximate.

As you can see from the height alone, the differences are significant. These values are not exact because they vary slightly depending on additional equipment. Based on our practical experience, we can say that the American Rubicon version is more than 0.75” higher than the European Sport version.

There are other variables too, like the engine type, which affects the vehicle’s weight. The equipment version and whether it’s a 2-door or 4-door model will also influence the vehicle’s weight. These factors also affect the vehicle’s maximum payload.

How and Why to Lift a Jeep by 1.5” – 4-Door JL Suspension Kit Recommendations

A 1.5″ lift is a great entry point. It usually doesn’t require major changes and can be done with a spacer lift (link) or by swapping out the springs.

Reasons to lift by 1.5 inches:

  • Fit larger wheels
  • Improve suspension stiffness
  • Increase load capacity (depending on the kit)

How to perform a 1.5” lift?

Spacers lift kit usually contains:

  • Coil spring spacers (front & rear)
  • Bump stop extensions (fron & rear)
  • Optional shock absorbers replacement to improve suspension performanceeszenia

Spring lift kit usually contains:

  • Longer springs (front & rear)
  • Bump stop extensions (front & rear)
  • Shock absorber extensions
  • Optionally, instead of shock extensions, replace the shock absorbers to improve suspension performance
  • Recommended replacement of sway bar links (front & rear)

Suspension kits up to 1.5 inches for Jeep JL

Body lift Rough Country Lift 1,25″

The first, lowest, and only option of its kind is a 1.25” body lift. It’s also a very budget-friendly way to raise your vehicle, but it’s important to be aware what are the consequences of installing a body lift. However, advantage is that it can be combined with a simple suspension lift, which together significantly increases ground clearance without the need to replace components like shock absorbers.

Suspension kit Sport ST1 TeraFlex Lift 1,5″

Basic 1.5″ spacer lift. Inexpensive, but doesn’t improve vahicle payload, handling or comfort. In fact, it could be the opposite due to the altered geometry, which is not compensated for by new control arms or shock absorbers.

Suspension kit B8 5100 Rubicon Bilstein Lift 1,5″

If you’re looking for a low lift – either because you don’t need a higher one, don’t like climbing into the car, or for any other reason – but still want a comprehensive lift kit that will improve the vehicle’s performance, this is it.

The kit includes all the parts necessary for proper suspension lifting. It also features Bilstein springs, which are known for being very comfortable for everyday driving on regular roads, and Bilstein B8 5100 shock absorbers, which enhance off-road performance with better ride control and quicker response to changing road conditions.

Suspension kit Clayton Lift 1,5″

A low lift doesn’t mean low quality. A good example is the Clayton Offroad lift kits, available in 1.5″ versions. The price reflects the use of premium materials and technical solutions designed to ensure the best performance both off-road and in the city. Clayton Offroad (link) is known for its attention to detail, which is why their control arms (link control arms) and bushings are considered the best in the world (link to bushings). For example, GIIRO bushings in the Overland kit are maintenance-free and perfect for daily driving. On the other hand, uniballs in the Premium kits require regular servicing but are fully rebuildable. Thanks to their wide angle of articulation, they provide more efficient suspension movement.

How and Why to Lift a Jeep by 2″ – 4-Door Suspension Kit Recommendations

The motivation to install a 2″ lift kit often comes from the desire to fit larger wheels, but it’s also frequently driven with the goal of enhancing the vehicle’s performance and off-road capability. Mainly through improved suspension articulation.

How to lift by 2 inches? In most cases, you will need:

Spacer kit:

  • Coil spring spacers (front & rear)
  • Bump stop extensions (front & rear)
  • Sway bar links (front & rear)*
  • Shock absorber extensions (front & rear) or optionally, replace the shock absorbers to improve performance

*Bolded products are additional components for the 1.5″ spacer lift kit.

Spring kit:

  • Longer springs (front & rear)
  • Bump stop extensions (front & rear)
  • Shock absorber extensions (front & rear) or optionally, replace the shock absorbers to improve performance
  • Sway bar links (front & rear) – may be required
  • Track bar relocation bracket (rear) – may be required

2 inches Lift Kits for the Jeep JL

Suspension kit AEV Lift 2″

This lift kit with spacers and shock extensions allows you to install 35″ tires and increases ground clearance, improving approach and departure angles for better navigation of difficult terrain. However, it won’t improve ride quality.

Suspension kit BDS Lift 2″

This lift kit is designed for the Wrangler JL with a gasoline engine only. It’s tailored for tough road conditions and is especially appreciated for comfort during everyday driving. The BDS springs paired with NX2 shock absorbers are highly resistant to external conditions, even extreme ones, and they effectively absorb bumps while off-roading.
