Pickup truck bed dimensions. How to measure and choose bed covers

Share:

If you own a pickup truck, it’s likely for one of three reasons: you enjoy large vehicles, you engage in a lot of outdoor activities, or you simply need a lot of space for transportation. Even if your truck bed is filled with random items, you probably don’t want them to get wet or end up in the wrong hands. That’s why you need a suitable cover. But do you know the exact length of your truck bed? If not, avoid costly mistakes by learning how to measure the cargo space in your pickup truck.

What about the units, meaning the dimensions of the cargo bed

Before you grab a measuring tape, here’s a quick note. Pickup truck bed dimensions are typically given in feet (′) and inches (″). For example, a RAM 1500, might list its bed length as 5′ 7″, meaning five feet and seven inches. If you’re more familiar with the metric system, you’ll need to convert these measurements into the appropriate units. It’s simple.

To make this task even easier and save you from opening a second browser tab, we’ll solve this example for you. First, remember that 1-inch equals 2.54 centimeters. Second, 1-foot equals 12 inches, or 30.48 centimeters. So, 5’ 7” equals 67 inches, which is approximately 170 cm.
One last tip: truck beds are measured inside, not along the outer edges.

Pickup truck bed dimensions – how to buy covers

To correctly determine the length of the cargo space in your pickup truck, you need to measure the inside of the bed from the front edge to the rear edge. Why are we emphasizing something that seems so trivial? This might seem trivial, but it’s important because, in the European market, inches are often associated with diagonal measurements, which isn’t relevant here. If the middle of your truck bed measures around 170 cm, you will need a 5’ 7” cover.

A few inches more or less won’t make a significant difference, but if the result is 7 inches more, or about 18 centimeters, you’ll need to choose a cover for a larger truck bed size. Keep in mind that just knowing your vehicle’s model and year might not be enough to find the correct size. Usually, you won’t find information about the truck bed length in the vehicle itself, especially if it’s a second-hand purchase. Now, that you know how to measure the cargo space in your pickup truck properly, you can choose the right cover with confidence.
