When you think of off-roading, you think of Jeep. I’m pretty sure that’s how it goes. This brand is basically all about customization culture. Where does its cult status come from? Why has it remained so popular among off-road enthusiasts and others for decades? Let’s dive into the history of one of the most recognizable vehicles – both on and off the road.
Origin, or where the first Jeep came from
Many car companies have had their ups and downs. Especially when it comes to serving state authorities and supplying military vehicles.
When it comes to cars, they first appeared on the front lines during World War I. But their significance really increased during the next international conflict. Some vehicles even became legends of the army and icons on the battlefields. Like the Jeep, which probably wouldn’t have existed in its present form if circumstances hadn’t required it. Sad but true.
The first Jeep was designed in 1941 specifically for the needs of the United States Armed Forces. They needed a light and low offroad patrol vehicle. So, the requirements included four-wheel drive and a rectangular body shape, which allowed for transporting wounded soldiers. Despite losing the contract, the task was best met by the Willys Overland company in collaboration (theoretically) with Ford, creating the Willys MA and MB, which soon unofficially became the Jeep.
Go anywhere, do anything – Jeep CJ (Civilian Jeep) the car for the masses
The end of the war meant victory for the United States on two fronts. The history of Jeep vehicles certainly didn’t end when the peace came. Quite the opposite, a true legend was about to be born. No wonder, since over 600,000 units were sold during the war. It wouldn’t have been smart to not use such potential.
So, in 1945, Willys introduced the CJ model to the market, the civilian version of its military vehicle. Proven technologies that worked well in tough situations were used for a completely new purpose. People liked them and they became a symbol of freedom that still matters today. The popularity achieved by the Jeep CJ was so great that it inspired other car manufacturers to create their own type of off-road vehicles. Companies like Mitsubishi, Land Rover, and Toyota Land Cruiser included. We could even say that without Jeep, they would never have released their versions of off-road vehicles.
Definition of an off-road vehicle, Jeep Wrangler series
Since the first Jeep CJ, Willys has merged several times and been purchased by various companies. It scored a merger with Kaiser Motors, then was absorbed by American Motors, and later Chrysler, etc. During this time, many iconic Jeep models were created – the first SUV in the family, the Jeep Wagoneer, and the pick-up truck, the Jeep Gladiator. However, the undisputed king of off-road and on-road came into the world in 1986, giving birth to everything originally associated with off-roading. I’m ,of course, talking about the Jeep Wrangler series – a synonym for an off-road vehicle.
Why the Jeep Wrangler is perfect for off-roading
The off-road potential of Jeeps, especially those from the Wrangler series, is primarily determined by their possibilities for modifications. It is also a model that was created out of need to drive in difficult conditions. It’s part of its nature and DNA.

The Jeep Wrangler is the most common choice for off-roading mainly due to its suspension with two solid axles, 4×4 drive, and a range of off-road features that vary depending on the model or series such as a reduction gear. For example, some Wrangler versions come from the factory with MT tires.
These cars simply handle unstable and uneven surfaces very well. This is also thanks to the well-thought-out distribution of mass and the size of the vehicles, as well as the construction of the suspension and steering system. Technologically, they are built more for power than speed.
Jeep Wrangler YJ (86–96) – the beginnings of fame and Hollywood history
The famous Wrangler series began with the Jeep YJ. The first direct successor to CJ model which has been produced for over forty years and had several variants, including the highly popular CJ-5. In some way, it’s also a square variation of it. It was the one and only Wrangler line having square headlights. Its shape, along with the exposed frame, has become iconic in the history of pop culture thanks to its appearance in the film Jurassic Park, where it began its cinematic career. It also remains the only dinosaur to have survived into modern times ;).
Jeep Wrangler TJ (96–06)
The turn of the millennium is a time of breakthroughs and changes also for the automotive industry. As evidenced by the Jeep TJ, the first model of the brand with coil suspension on both the front and rear axles. Thus, the Jeep Wrangler says goodbye to its military past, becaming even more into civilian use. This solution significantly increases driving comfort on asphalt and makes it a more versatile vehicle.
However, it doesn’t completely cut ties with its history and returns to the rounded design of the headlights. But it doesn’t completely break off all governmental romances. Under the Jeep label, the first four-door version of the Wrangler TJ is created under license by the Israeli army.

There’s no turning back, Rubicon enters the showrooms
In 2002, the Rubicon version was released, which is even more adapted to off-road than the Wrangler TJ. Mainly because of the differential locks installed at the front and back. What’s more it had additional accessories. On the basis of the huge success of this model, in 2005 a special edition Sahara was created. It appeared in the movie of the same name Sahara with Matthew Mcconaughey behind the wheel, playing the lead role. It differed from the basic Rubicon by the exposed frame. Perfect for desert landscapes.
However, this isn’t the greatest success in the Hollywood career of the Jeep Wrangler TJ. Two years earlier, in 2003, a unique Tomb Raider edition was created, available only in 1000 copies. It was the most off-road version of the TJ, featuring a raised suspension on Skyjacker shocks, Bushwacker fender flares, and a Warn winch. The exposed frame allowed Lara Croft to make spectacular landing on the rear of the vehicle.
Fun fact
Jeep Wrangler cars also accompany the virtual version of Lara Croft. You can find models of these cars in games like Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation and (my favorite) Tomb Raider: Legend.
From 2004 to 2006, the Jeep Wrangler TJU/LJ was produced, which is an extended version of the standard TJ with a longer two-door frame. This optimized size made it an excellent off-road vehicle. It was a limited edition model. Still highly wanted today among off-road enthusiasts.
Jeep Wrangler JK (07–18)
All good things ends someday. And in the case of Jeep, it makes room for even better things. After the Wrangler TJ comes the iconic JK. The Jeep Wrangler JK is available immediately in two-door (JK) and four-door (JKU) variants. The JK is shorter than the LJ model, while the JKU one is longer. This makes the Wrangler LJ still unique in off-road mud and that’s why the Wrangler LJ is still a gem. Returning to JK, the four-door option is also more popular and represents about ¾ of all sold cars.
In 2010/2011, Jeep Wrangler JK gets a big update changing interior, cockpit, switches, steering wheel, roof, etc. As a result, it achieves a modern look and hits the taste of the civilian user even more.
Important!
Some modifiable elements, including the interiors parts and panel, designed after 2011, will not fit the older versions of JK.
Jeep Wrangler JL (from 18)
In 2018, the most current Jeep Wrangler JL in a two-door (JL) and four-door (JLU) version comes out. Structurally, it’s almost an identical model to JK. It’s also similarly modifiable, so almost everything can be replaced in it. However, remember that despite clear similarities, components from JK do not fit JL. Differences will also be visible between the American and European version, mainly in the front bumper and grill.
Accessories 4×4 for JL
Since the Jeep Wrangler JL is definitely a car of our times, a 4XE version with hybrid drive and electronic motor appears in 2021. It’s still a model easy to modify, but the car itself is 100 kg heavier. The part with the charging socket may be problematic during modifications, as some components that will be installed there may not fit.
Very interesting and highly desirable version released in 2022 is the Jeep Wrangler JL 392 with a V8 engine, producing 470 horsepower under the hood, sounds like a promise of good fun. It’s also immediately a very off-road option with 1” higher suspension than standard and 33” wheels. Unfortunately, this model is not directly available in Europe.
The Jeep Wrangler JL also appears in the Sky One Touch version with a retractable canvas roof and removable third window. This is a great, fancy solution loved by consumers. When buying suitable accessories, pay attention to roof racks. They must be specially adapted to this model.
Fun fact
Jeep promoted Wrangler JL with a commercial spot to referencing the movie Jurrasic Park. In the ad, a large T-Rex raced with a Jeep, with none other than Jeff Goldblum himself behind the wheel. Another proof that history comes full circle
The New Jeep Wrangler in 2024
In 2024, the Wrangler JL underwent facelift, with the main visible difference in the design and shape of the grille. However, the biggest changes were in the interior, where a modern, touchscreen display appeared. When we talk about suspension there were changes in the construction of the rear axle and driveshaft, which were disconnected from the hub.
Facelifted version is available in Europe with a 2.0-liter petrol engine , which is undoubtedly good news for off-road drivers. In the US only, there will likely also be an option with 35” wheels on beadlock rims. It is a gesture towards off-road enthusiasts, who, as we know, have “dirty thoughts” and “impure intentions” 😉
Jeep Gladiator JT (from 19) – a pick-up in the shape of a Wrangler
Finally, it’s worth mentioning the Jeep Gladiator JT here. Of course, Jeep has had various versions of pickup trucks in its history, including those based on Wrangler series models (e.g., Jeep Brute). However, new Gladiator JT, based on the JL platform, leaves the strongest impression on drivers. The JT shares interior elements: front suspension, engine range, front bumper and hood with Wrangler JL. This model is highly popular among off-road fans focused on overlanding or off-road expeditions.
What’s interesting, Jeep had previously created a Gladiator based on the Wrangler JK, but it never went on sale. Instead, there was an option to convert the four-door JK into a two-door version with a bed, effectively serving as a short pickup. The entire kit needed for the conversion came in a box. This also demonstrates the manufacturer’s approach to modifying the Wrangler. It should be noted that this is a serious modification.

For the moment, this concludes the history of the Jeep Wrangler – the most recognizable off-road vehicle. This is not the end of the story of Jeep and its off-road aspirations and destiny. The Wrangler’s fate is mixed with the no less liked SUV Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, but that’s a story for another time.
