Jeep Wrangler 2024 is already on the roads and off-road. What’s new? What’s changed compared to the JL? We check it

The new version of the favorite off-road vehicle. The Jeep Wrangler JL debuted in 2018 with flagship versions like the Sahara and Rubicon. Since then, it has been handling not only rugged terrains but also urban roads. Now it’s time for the newest version of this popular model. How has the Wrangler changed in 2024? Is it now better for off-roading? Let’s find out together.

Facelift – changes in the new Wrangler visible at first glance

First, some good news for most fans of the Wrangler JL. Many of us complained about the less stylish and less aggressive, rounded shaped grille in this model. That’s why in the new version of the Jeep Wrangler 2024, the improved design of the iconic grille stands out immediately. The characteristic seven-slot design remains unchanged, but each slot now has an angular frame. This makes the new grille much more rugged than its precursor.

Additionally, the whole grille is shorter, but the manufacturer assures us that the cooling capacity has not decreased; in fact, it has increased. This change was mainly to fit the factory installed Warn winch in Rubicon models. Unfortunately, not for the European version.

In terms of design, there are also changes to the cowl, headlights, and new wheel designs. Looking at the Wrangler 2024, you can notice the lack of a sticking out antenna, which is now integrated into the front windshield. This update was made because drivers complained about this part getting caught on obstacles during off-road driving.

Changed construction – Jeep Wrangler 2024 gets a full-float axle

When we talk about off-road driving, we should highlight the most important structural changes in the Jeep Wrangler 2024. The most interesting solution, used in the Wrangler for the first time, is the rear Dana 44 full-float axle in all Rubicon models. How does it work?

Semi-float vs. full-float – differences in axle constructions

As you probably know, the task of the drive shaft is to transfer torque from the differential to the wheel. In the previous solution, i.e., semi-float, the drive shaft also carried some of the vehicle’s weight. This was due to the lack of a direct connection between the wheel hub and the axle housing. In such a case, heavier vehicles were more prone to drive system failures, and in the case of a drive shaft break, they were completely immobilized until a tow truck arrived.

That’s why in the full-float axle, the wheel hub is somehow connected to the axle housing. The outer end of the axle housing is connected to the wheel hub using tapered roller bearings. This means the drive shaft is much less loaded, and the vehicle’s weight is mostly carried by the axle housing. The only function of the drive shaft is to transfer drive to the wheel hub.

Advantages and disadvantages of the full-float axle

In practice, this means that the full-float construction can carry much heavier loads. This translates to higher durability of the drive system and easier servicing. So, such solutions are often intended for heavy-duty tasks and used in trucks and off-road vehicles. The new Wrangler clearly shows what it was designed for.

However, there are also some disadvantages to this solution. First, it has a much higher production cost and second, greater weight due to the complexity of the construction.

Important!

Although the Jeep Wrangler 2024 is a direct continuation of the JL model, some parts and accessories may not be compatible between models due to changes and upgrades applied in the new version. For example, electric side steps and sway bar links may not fit because they now have M14x1.5 bolts (the previous JL edition had M12x1.5). Keep this in mind when making modifications.

Off-road capabilities in every inch – the new JL has bigger wheels, ground clearance, and wading depth

Structural changes have led to further improvements. The use of the new full-float rear axle solution has resulted in the Jeep Wrangler 2024 also getting bigger wheels. In the classic Rubicon version, these are 33” off-road tires, and in the new Rubicon X variant, they are 35” with beadlock rims – unfortunately, this option is also only available in the US market.

These modernizations also provide a higher ground clearance of 12.9” and greater obstacle-crossing capabilities. The wading depth has also been increased, now reaching 34”, which is higher than the seat cushion.

Where the power comes from – the drivetrain in the 2024 Jeep Wrangler models

The latest Jeep Wrangler clearly shows the direction of its development. It leads towards electrification. Jeep plans to fully electrify all its model lines by 2025, at least in North America.

The existing drivetrains known from previous Wrangler JL versions remain unchanged. Jeep still offers the 4WD system and a 100:1 crawl ratio and offers the following options:

  • 2.0-liter turbocharged PHEV 4xe engine with 375 HP and 470 torque
  • 2.0-liter turbocharged R4 engine with 270 HP and 295 torque
  • 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 HP and 260 torque
  • 6.4-liter V8 engine with 470 HP and 470 torque

However, the 2024 Wrangler expands the line with a 4xe model with a special Power Box, equipped with four 120 V outlets with a total power of 30 amps to power external devices, which is a clear nod from Jeep towards camping and overlanding. Especially since in the 2.0-liter and 3.6-liter Rubicon models, thanks to the use of the full-float rear axle, towing capacity increases to 5000 lbs. Enough to tow a trailer.

Jeep also considers the different preferences of its customers. Therefore, in some European countries, there is a limited version of the 2024 Jeep Wrangler with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 272 HP and 400 torque, and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. Interestingly, there is no indication that we will get a diesel engine version.

New technologies and electronics – Jeep Wrangler 2024 goes with the times

In the latest edition, Jeep has finally considered more than just high driving standards and off-road performance. The 2024 Wrangler JL also focuses on safety, finally introducing side curtain airbags for the first and second row passengers. Additionally, it offers many extra features and services to make driving easier, including camera views and a navigation system with off-road trails. All vehicle settings available for the specific model are managed through the UConnect 5 software.

To operate the new system in the 2024 Wrangler, a 12.3-inch touchscreen is available across the entire range. This large LED display is definitely more convenient to use in any conditions. However, passenger`s comfort is also ensured by the front seats, which are electrically adjustable in 12 levels for the first time. All switches and connectors available in the cabin are properly sealed, so the 2024 Wrangler still allows for solid water immersion.
